My endeavor to make this world a better place

During my primary school years in Chennai, I volunteered almost every Saturday at the Blue Cross, an animal welfare organization. I rescued injured birds and animals from my neighborhood and either cared for them myself or ensured they received proper treatment at Blue Cross. I was known in my society as the ‘rescuer kid’ and my parents used to get calls asking for me when someone spotted an injured animal or bird in the society campus. This experience taught me the importance of dedication, compassion and the profound difference one individual can make for the well-being of animals.

One evening in Chennai after a severe storm, I noticed a kite fallen down at a corner in our park, drenched and barely able to move. With my mom's help, we brought the bird home, dried it and watched over it through the night. The next morning, after resting the kite recovered and flew off into the sky. This experience taught me the value of compassion and the impact small actions can have on the lives of any living species.

My journey in community service began when I visited an orphanage supported by my mom and her college alumni, I was barely 6 years old back then. These early experiences taught me the importance of empathy and giving back to those in need. As I grew, these experiences instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards my community and a deep understanding of how even small acts of kindness can make a significant impact.

Community service for me is not about fulfilling a duty but about fostering connections, understanding diverse experiences and making a positive impact in the lives of others. Whether caring for animals, supporting underprivileged children or working with special needs students, these experiences have profoundly shaped who I am today and continue to inspire my actions as I look forward to contributing to a better world..!

My commitment to community service has evolved over the years, reflecting both my personal growth and changing environment. Currently, I volunteer at a special needs school, where I work closely with children with autism, teaching them digital literacy. This role has been incredibly rewarding, offering me new insights into the challenges these children and their families face. It has also reinforced my belief in the importance of patience, understanding and the powerful impact of inclusive education.

One late evening, while returning from the Khajaguda hills after testing my NOAA satellite data capture project, I noticed a small creature moving under a bush. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a wild whistling duck, injured and separated from its flock. Concerned, I brought the duck home, ensured its comfort for the night and then contacted a wildlife preservation officer the next day. The officer assured me that the duck would be taken care of and released back into its natural environment. This experience highlighted the fragility of wildlife and reinforced my dedication to helping animals in need.

The Bay of Bengal coastline is one of the key nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles, particularly between December and February. During my days back in Chennai, I used to join my dad and other volunteers on turtle walks along the Besant Nagar shore. These efforts were part of a conservation initiative to protect the vulnerable Olive Ridley turtle’s population. We would relocate the eggs to hatcheries that we build temporarily along the coast, ensuring they were safe from predators and environmental threats until they were ready to hatch. Once the hatchlings were strong enough, we released them into the sea. This experience instilled in me a deep respect for wildlife conservation and the delicate balance of nature.

Throughout my MYP school years at DPSI in Gurgaon and Oakridge International in Hyderabad, I actively participated in various community and social service projects organized by my schools. These initiatives, whether organizing drives, engaging in awareness campaigns or hands-on volunteering, deepened my understanding of collaboration, leadership and the continuous need for community support.
