Community Project - Afforestation

During one of my community service projects when at MYP3, Oakridge International School, my team and I focused on tackling the critical issue of deforestation. We aimed to explore ways to decrease deforestation while promoting afforestation efforts in our community. Our approach was not just theoretical; we wanted to make an actionable impact.

We began by researching the causes and effects of deforestation, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. Through classroom discussions and workshops, we came to understand the devastating impact deforestation has on biodiversity, climate change and our local ecosystems. With this information in hand, we devised strategies that could be implemented at the grassroots level.

The core of our project involved raising awareness about the importance of planting trees. We recognized that simply educating people wouldn't be enough but action was key. At the conclusion of our project, we organized an exhibition that showcased our findings and presented practical ways for our community to contribute to reducing deforestation. One of the most exciting aspects of the exhibition was the distribution of plant saplings. Each person that visited the exhibition was encouraged to take a sapling home, plant it and continue to nurture it. We emphasized that this simple act could lead to larger change if people spread the word and inspired others to do the same.

Our hope was that by distributing saplings and starting conversations, we could create a ripple effect within the community. The goal was to motivate people to not only plant these trees but to continue the process of reforestation, leading to long-term environmental benefits. This project showed me that small and consistent efforts by individuals can make a meaningful difference in combating global challenges like deforestation.
